Why Walmart will be the health care provider of the Future

October 24th, 2006 · No Comments

It’s that time of year again to get a flu shot. Like every year I recently went down to my doctor’s office, and was reminded why traditional health care is so screwed up. Despite being organized with a special “flu shot clinic”, it still took me 25 minutes just to get past the waiting room. Not to mention the countless forms I had to verify my records and sign, including one that informed me that the shot cost $23 if my insurance didn’t cover the expense.

With Walmart’s decision to offer flu shots and $4 prescription drugs (based on their amazing buying power), it’s only time before they enter the in-store clinic market. Already market tests like this one in Utah are showing that consumers want the same fast, efficient, customer friendly service in health care as they are use to getting at the grocery store. My advice to traditional Doctor’s offices: evolve now while you still have a chance to keep your customers.
